1. put on safety glasses and a dust mask.
2. grab the sander with both hands.
3. turn on the sander and let it get to full pace before touching the surface area.
4. move the sander in a slow, sweeping movement across the surface. Be sure not to press down too hard as this can damage the wood and the sander.

That's a really good guide, user. I just want to add that you must invariably go with the grain of the wood and not from it.
